In 2021, the CIS lubricant additives market increased by 3.1% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after four years of decline. Overall, consumption recorded a slight decline. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, lubricant additives production reduced to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a pronounced setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of prepared additives for mineral oils, when their volume increased by 8.8% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports recorded a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 1,133% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, lubricant additives exports expanded notably to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 394% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Belarus (X tons) was the major exporter of prepared additives for mineral oils, achieving 65% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Russia (X tons), constituting a 35% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Russia (with a CAGR of +9.1%).
In value terms, the largest lubricant additives supplying countries in the CIS were Belarus ($X) and Russia ($X).
Among the main exporting countries, Russia, with a CAGR of +8.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 5.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 99%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Belarus totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (-0.4%).
Lubricant Additives Imports
Imports in CIS
Lubricant additives imports rose to X tons in 2021, with an increase of 2.5% compared with 2020. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +89.2% against 2012 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 23%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, lubricant additives imports stood at $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Russia dominates imports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 81% of total imports in 2021. Belarus (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Kazakhstan (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 16% share of total imports.
Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Belarus (+13.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +13.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kazakhstan (-2.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Russia (+4.7 p.p.) and Belarus (+3.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Kazakhstan (-9.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported prepared additives for mineral oils in the CIS, comprising 85% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 6% share of total imports.
In Russia, lubricant additives imports expanded at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (-4.8% per year) and Belarus (+2.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 6.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced descent. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (-2.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
