Preserved Tomato Market Size in CIS

After two years of growth, the CIS preserved tomato market decreased by -0.4% to $X in 2021. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, preserved tomato production fell slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. In 2021, shipments abroad of preserved tomatoes increased by 1.1% to X tons, rising for the fifth consecutive year after four years of decline. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 111% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, preserved tomato exports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 129%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Armenia (X tons) and Russia (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together creating 89% of total exports. Azerbaijan (X tons), Moldova (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Russia (with a CAGR of +42.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Armenia ($X), Russia ($X) and Azerbaijan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 94% share of total exports.

Russia, with a CAGR of +40.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 4.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 13%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (+2.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in CIS

In 2021, preserved tomato imports in the CIS skyrocketed to X tons, with an increase of 22% on 2020. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, preserved tomato imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +79.1% against 2016 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Russia prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 85% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), comprising a 7.5% share of total imports. Belarus (X tons), Moldova (X tons) and Azerbaijan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of preserved tomatoes. At the same time, Moldova (+17.8%), Azerbaijan (+13.3%), Kazakhstan (+10.7%) and Belarus (+10.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Moldova emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +17.8% from 2012-2021. While the share of Kazakhstan (+4.1 p.p.) and Belarus (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Russia (-9.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported preserved tomatoes in the CIS, comprising 83% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 7.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 3.7% share.

In Russia, preserved tomato imports expanded at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (+9.5% per year) and Belarus (+9.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, growing by 8.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
