After two years of decline, the CIS primary cell and battery market increased by 13% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a pronounced descent. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Production of Primary Cells and Batteries in CIS
In value terms, primary cell and battery production expanded markedly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 61% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in CIS
For the eleventh year in a row, the CIS recorded growth in overseas shipments of primary cells and batteries, which increased by 3.3% to X units in 2022. Overall, exports showed a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 149% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
In value terms, primary cell and battery exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 95% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Russia (X units) and Belarus (X units) dominates exports structure, together mixing up 94% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X units), comprising a 5.3% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Belarus (with a CAGR of +122.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest primary cell and battery supplier in the CIS, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 30% share of total exports.
In Russia, primary cell and battery exports increased at an average annual rate of +15.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kazakhstan (+43.9% per year) and Belarus (+46.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 58%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per unit), while Belarus (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (-13.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Imports of Primary Cells and Batteries
Imports in CIS
For the third consecutive year, the CIS recorded growth in purchases abroad of primary cells and batteries, which increased by 7.7% to X units in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 12%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
In value terms, primary cell and battery imports contracted modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Russia prevails in imports structure, amounting to X units, which was near 88% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X units), achieving a 4.6% share of total imports. Kazakhstan (X units) and Azerbaijan (X units) took a relatively small share of total imports.
Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Azerbaijan (+30.8%), Belarus (+7.2%) and Kazakhstan (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Azerbaijan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +30.8% from 2012-2022. While the share of Belarus (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Russia (-5.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported primary cells and batteries in the CIS, comprising 75% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 9.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 4.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia stood at -1.2%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kazakhstan (+6.1% per year) and Belarus (+3.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per unit, shrinking by -10.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a slight reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per unit), while Russia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
