In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of propelling or sliding pencils, when their volume increased by 28% to X units. Total imports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 69% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, sliding pencil imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Russia prevails in imports structure, finishing at X units, which was near 88% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X units), making up a 6.9% share of total imports. Kazakhstan (X units) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to sliding pencil imports into Russia stood at +1.1%. At the same time, Belarus (+5.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +5.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kazakhstan (-1.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Belarus (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Russia (-1.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported propelling or sliding pencils in the CIS, comprising 83% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with an 8.9% share of total imports.

In Russia, sliding pencil imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belarus (-0.6% per year) and Kazakhstan (-3.1% per year).

In 2021, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per unit, with a decrease of -2.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 15%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per unit), while Russia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (-1.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
