Propene Market Size in CIS

The CIS propene market expanded to $X in 2021, rising by 3.2% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Propene Production in CIS

In value terms, propene production surged to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -13.7% against 2019 indices. In 2021, overseas shipments of propene (propylene) were finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports showed a buoyant expansion. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, propene exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a prominent increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Russia dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 97% of total exports in 2021. Azerbaijan (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the propene (propylene) exports, with a CAGR of +21.3% from 2012 to 2021. Azerbaijan (-18.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Russia (+47 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Azerbaijan saw its share reduced by -45.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest propene supplier in the CIS, comprising 99% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Azerbaijan ($X), with a 1.3% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia totaled +17.1%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 47% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Azerbaijan stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (-3.5%).

Propene Imports

Imports in CIS

In 2021, overseas purchases of propene (propylene) increased by 84% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 303% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, propene imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 250%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Belarus prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 98% of total imports in 2021. Russia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Belarus was also the fastest-growing in terms of the propene (propylene) imports, with a CAGR of +6.0% from 2012 to 2021. Russia (-32.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Belarus (+54 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -54% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Belarus ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported propene (propylene) in the CIS, comprising 91% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Russia ($X), with an 8.3% share of total imports.

In Belarus, propene imports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the period from 2012-2021.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -17.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern.
