In 2021, overseas shipments of propene (propylene) were finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports showed a buoyant expansion. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, propene exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a prominent increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Russia dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 97% of total exports in 2021. Azerbaijan (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the propene (propylene) exports, with a CAGR of +21.3% from 2012 to 2021. Azerbaijan (-18.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Russia (+47 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Azerbaijan saw its share reduced by -45.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest propene supplier in the CIS, comprising 99% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Azerbaijan ($X), with a 1.3% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia totaled +17.1%.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 47% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Azerbaijan stood at $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (-3.5%).
Propene Imports
Imports in CIS
In 2021, overseas purchases of propene (propylene) increased by 84% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 303% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, propene imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 250%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Belarus prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 98% of total imports in 2021. Russia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Belarus was also the fastest-growing in terms of the propene (propylene) imports, with a CAGR of +6.0% from 2012 to 2021. Russia (-32.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Belarus (+54 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -54% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Belarus ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported propene (propylene) in the CIS, comprising 91% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Russia ($X), with an 8.3% share of total imports.
In Belarus, propene imports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the period from 2012-2021.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -17.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 41%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then fell remarkably in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Belarus totaled $X per ton.
