The CIS pumpkin market contracted to $X in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Pumpkin Production in CIS
In value terms, pumpkin production dropped modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a noticeable setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 142%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.
The country with the largest volume of pumpkin production was Russia (X tons), comprising approx. 95% of total volume. It was followed by Azerbaijan (X tons), with a 2.5% share of total production.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Russia was relatively modest. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Azerbaijan (+2.2% per year) and Moldova (-4.9% per year).
The average pumpkin yield dropped modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, remaining constant against 2021 figures. Overall, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 9.9%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the pumpkin yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, approx. X ha of pumpkin (squash and gourds) were harvested in the CIS; flattening at the year before. Overall, the harvested area, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the harvested area increased by 10%. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the pumpkin harvested area remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in CIS
In 2022, overseas shipments of pumpkin (squash and gourds) were finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 318%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, pumpkin exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 224%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
The biggest shipments were from Uzbekistan (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons), together amounting to 86% of total export. It was distantly followed by Moldova (X tons), committing a 7.4% share of total exports. The following exporters - Kazakhstan (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) - each finished at a 5.3% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +36.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X), Russia ($X) and Kyrgyzstan ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 81% share of total exports.
Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +45.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -25.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 36% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+6.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in CIS
Pumpkin imports shrank to X tons in 2022, waning by -11.6% against the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +25.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 49%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, pumpkin imports reduced to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +22.6% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 40% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank in the following year.
Imports by Country
Russia prevails in imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 88% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), making up a 5.3% share of total imports. Belarus (X tons) and Moldova (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Belarus (+16.1%) and Kazakhstan (+3.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +16.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Moldova (-6.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Moldova (+1.7 p.p.) and Belarus (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Kazakhstan (-1.6 p.p.) and Russia (-3.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pumpkin (squash and gourds) in the CIS, comprising 89% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 3.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Moldova, with a 2.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia stood at +4.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (+16.9% per year) and Moldova (+3.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, stabilizing at the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a slight setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Moldova ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Moldova (+11.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
