The CIS quicklime market dropped modestly to $X in 2022, waning by -4.3% against the previous year. In general, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then fell in the following year.
Quicklime Production in CIS
In value terms, quicklime production dropped modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production saw a pronounced downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 7.5% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

For the seventh year in a row, the CIS recorded growth in shipments abroad of quicklime, which increased by 8.7% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports posted buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 163%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, quicklime exports declined slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 148% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced modestly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Russia represented the main exporter of quicklime in the CIS, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 50% of total exports in 2022. Uzbekistan (X tons) took a 30% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Belarus (14%) and Azerbaijan (5.2%).
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Azerbaijan (with a CAGR of +334.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Russia ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Belarus ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 93% of total exports. These countries were followed by Azerbaijan, which accounted for a further 5.1%.
Among the main exporting countries, Azerbaijan, with a CAGR of +330.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, waning by -11.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 13%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Belarus ($X per ton) and Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) and Azerbaijan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (-1.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Quicklime Imports
Imports in CIS
Quicklime imports expanded markedly to X tons in 2022, growing by 15% compared with 2021 figures. Total imports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +128.2% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 25%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, quicklime imports expanded significantly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +78.5% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Kazakhstan (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) were the major importers of quicklime in 2022, recording approx. 41% and 35% of total imports, respectively. Russia (X tons) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Armenia (6.6%). Kyrgyzstan (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Armenia (with a CAGR of +103.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest quicklime importing markets in the CIS were Kazakhstan ($X), Belarus ($X) and Russia ($X), with a combined 85% share of total imports. Armenia and Kyrgyzstan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.
Armenia, with a CAGR of +91.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -5.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a slight curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the import price increased by 27% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+1.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
