Lime Market Size in CIS

In 2021, the CIS lime market was finally on the rise to reach $X after three years of decline. In general, consumption, however, recorded a pronounced setback. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Lime Production in CIS

In value terms, lime production amounted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in CIS

In 2021, shipments abroad of quicklime, slaked lime and hydraulic lime increased by 4.9% to X tons, rising for the sixth consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports saw a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 126% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, lime exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 110%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Russia (X tons) represented the key exporter of quicklime, slaked lime and hydraulic lime, achieving 61% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons) and Belarus (X tons), together generating a 35% share of total exports. The following exporters - Azerbaijan (X tons) and Moldova (X tons) - each resulted at a 3.2% share of total exports.

Exports from Russia increased at an average annual rate of +17.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Azerbaijan (+152.6%), Uzbekistan (+83.9%), Moldova (+69.4%) and Belarus (+5.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Azerbaijan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +152.6% from 2012-2021. Uzbekistan (+18 p.p.), Russia (+4.9 p.p.), Azerbaijan (+1.6 p.p.) and Moldova (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Belarus saw its share reduced by -25.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest lime supplier in the CIS, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 26% share of total exports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia totaled +9.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uzbekistan (+89.5% per year) and Belarus (+0.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 13% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a noticeable setback. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Azerbaijan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Lime Imports

Imports in CIS

After five years of growth, supplies from abroad of quicklime, slaked lime and hydraulic lime decreased by -4.9% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 20%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

In value terms, lime imports rose to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan was the major importer of quicklime, slaked lime and hydraulic lime in the CIS, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 41% of total imports in 2021. Belarus (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Russia (X tons), Armenia (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 56% share of total imports. Moldova (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Armenia (with a CAGR of +37.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest lime importing markets in the CIS were Kazakhstan ($X), Russia ($X) and Armenia ($X), with a combined 80% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Armenia, with a CAGR of +34.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 9.9% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the import price increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Armenia ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
