Quince Market Size in CIS

The CIS quince market expanded sharply to $X in 2021, surging by 8.1% against the previous year. Overall, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Quince Production in CIS

In value terms, quince production soared to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a mild reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 27%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of quince production was Uzbekistan (X tons), comprising approx. 63% of total volume. Moreover, quince production in Uzbekistan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Azerbaijan (X tons), twofold. Russia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume in Uzbekistan was relatively modest. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Azerbaijan (+4.2% per year) and Russia (+4.8% per year).

In 2021, the average quince yield in the CIS contracted slightly to X tons per ha, leveling off at 2020 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 6.5%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the total area harvested in terms of quinces production in the CIS contracted modestly to X ha, falling by -2.8% on 2020. Overall, the harvested area continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the harvested area increased by 7%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in CIS

After six years of growth, shipments abroad of quinces decreased by -32.3% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 71%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

In value terms, quince exports reduced dramatically to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 95%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then shrank notably in the following year.

Exports by Country

Azerbaijan was the largest exporter of quinces in the CIS, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 84% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons), generating a 12% share of total exports. Moldova (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Azerbaijan increased at an average annual rate of +26.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Moldova (+32.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Moldova emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +32.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Uzbekistan (-14.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Uzbekistan (+12 p.p.) and Azerbaijan (+3.7 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Azerbaijan ($X) remains the largest quince supplier in the CIS, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 14% share of total exports.

In Azerbaijan, quince exports expanded at an average annual rate of +24.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uzbekistan (-11.0% per year) and Moldova (+30.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, surging by 4.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Moldova ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+4.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of quinces, when their volume increased by 10% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports saw a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 48% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, quince imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 43%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Russia dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 94% of total imports in 2021. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to quince imports into Russia stood at +6.9%. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+107.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +107.3% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Russia and Kyrgyzstan increased by +6.6 and +1.9 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported quinces in the CIS, comprising 95% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 0.8% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia totaled +5.8%.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 7.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan stood at $X per ton.
