In general, exports enjoyed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 188%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, railway passenger coach exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 221% against the previous year. Exports by Country
Russia was the largest exporting country with an export of around X units, which reached 82% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X units), generating an 18% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to railway passenger coach exports from Russia stood at +36.1%. At the same time, Belarus (+76.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +76.8% from 2012-2022. Russia (+67 p.p.) and Belarus (+17 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Belarus ($X) and Russia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022.
Among the main exporting countries, Belarus, with a CAGR of +72.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the CIS stood at $X per unit in 2022, growing by 14% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 549% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per unit), while Russia totaled $X per unit.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+4.1%).

In 2022, purchases abroad of railway or tramway passenger coaches (not self-propelled) increased by 41% to X units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, faced a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 259% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, railway passenger coach imports shrank rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 240% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Azerbaijan represented the largest importer of railway or tramway passenger coaches (not self-propelled) in the CIS, with the volume of imports recording X units, which was near 50% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Russia (X units), Belarus (X units) and Kazakhstan (X units), together making up a 46% share of total imports. Uzbekistan (X units) took a relatively small share of total imports.
Imports into Azerbaijan decreased at an average annual rate of -1.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+19.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +19.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Russia (-11.4%), Belarus (-11.5%) and Kazakhstan (-17.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Azerbaijan (+30 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Belarus (-3.1 p.p.), Russia (-4 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (-7.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Azerbaijan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported railway or tramway passenger coaches (not self-propelled) in the CIS, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uzbekistan ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Russia, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Azerbaijan amounted to +13.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uzbekistan (-0.5% per year) and Russia (-17.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the CIS stood at $X per unit in 2022, with a decrease of -40.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 337%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per unit), while Belarus ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (+14.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
