Paddy Rice Market Size in CIS

The CIS paddy rice market rose slightly to $X in 2021, surging by 2.7% against the previous year. In general, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Paddy Rice Production in CIS

In value terms, paddy rice production amounted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Russia (X tons) remains the largest paddy rice producing country in the CIS, accounting for 52% of total volume. Moreover, paddy rice production in Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Kazakhstan (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Uzbekistan (X tons), with a 14% share.

In Russia, paddy rice production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Kazakhstan (+5.3% per year) and Uzbekistan (-0.8% per year).

In 2021, the average paddy rice yield in the CIS fell slightly to X tons per ha, dropping by -2.1% compared with the previous year. In general, the yield, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 4.9% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2020, and then shrank slightly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The paddy rice harvested area expanded to X ha in 2021, surging by 1.8% compared with 2020. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 9.8% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in CIS

In 2021, shipments abroad of paddy rice decreased by -33% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports saw a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 73% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, paddy rice exports declined sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 80%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Russia prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 98% of total exports in 2021. Kazakhstan (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from Russia decreased at an average annual rate of -14.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+91.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kazakhstan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +91.5% from 2012-2021. While the share of Kazakhstan (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Russia (-2.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest paddy rice supplier in the CIS, comprising 99% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 0.8% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia totaled -13.2%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 8.6% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 11%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+1.8%).

Imports in CIS

For the third year in a row, the CIS recorded decline in supplies from abroad of paddy rice, which decreased by -20.1% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports saw a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 297% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, paddy rice imports shrank dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 126%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Uzbekistan was the main importer of paddy rice in the CIS, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 68% of total imports in 2021. Kazakhstan (X tons) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Russia (9.7%). Armenia (X tons) and Tajikistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Uzbekistan increased at an average annual rate of +17.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+30.8%) and Tajikistan (+14.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kazakhstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +30.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Russia (-3.5%) and Armenia (-23.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Uzbekistan (+68 p.p.), Kazakhstan (+14 p.p.), Russia (+5.8 p.p.) and Tajikistan (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Armenia saw its share reduced by -7.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, the largest paddy rice importing markets in the CIS were Russia ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Kazakhstan ($X), together comprising 91% of total imports.

Kazakhstan, with a CAGR of +18.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -1.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, posted pronounced growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 100%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+8.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
