Rice Market Size in CIS
The CIS rice market fell slightly to $X in 2021, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Rice Production in CIS
In value terms, rice production expanded to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the production volume increased by 61%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
Russia (X tons) remains the largest rice producing country in the CIS, accounting for 53% of total volume. Moreover, rice production in Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Kazakhstan (X tons), twofold. Uzbekistan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 16% share.
In Russia, rice production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (+4.1% per year) and Uzbekistan (+0.3% per year).
The average rice yield dropped slightly to X tons per ha in 2021, remaining stable against the previous year's figure. Overall, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the yield increased by 4.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the rice yield reached the peak level at X tons per ha in 2020, and then reduced slightly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2021, the harvested area of rice in the CIS contracted modestly to X ha, waning by -3.6% against the previous year. Overall, the harvested area, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the harvested area increased by 9.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to rice production attained the maximum at X ha in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in CIS
In 2021, approx. X tons of rice were exported in the CIS; falling by -1.6% against 2020. Over the period under review, exports showed a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 25%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, rice exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the two major exporters of rice, namely Russia and Kazakhstan, represented more than two-thirds of total export.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Kazakhstan (with a CAGR of +9.9%).
In value terms, Russia ($X) and Kazakhstan ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Kazakhstan, with a CAGR of +12.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+2.0%).
Rice Imports
Imports in CIS
In 2021, the amount of rice imported in the CIS declined to X tons, shrinking by -8.5% against 2020 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 32%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, rice imports expanded slightly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Russia was the main importer of rice in the CIS, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 47% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), Azerbaijan (X tons), Tajikistan (X tons), Uzbekistan (X tons) and Belarus (X tons), together constituting a 47% share of total imports. Moldova (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to rice imports into Russia stood at -1.2%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+30.2%), Azerbaijan (+11.4%) and Kazakhstan (+9.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +30.2% from 2012-2021. Belarus experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Moldova (-1.7%) and Tajikistan (-1.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan increased by +7, +6.7 and +6.4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported rice in the CIS, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Azerbaijan, with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia amounted to -2.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (+11.9% per year) and Azerbaijan (+20.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (+8.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
