After two years of decline, the CIS mill rolling roll market increased by 11% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, showed a pronounced downturn. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +96.1% against 2014 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, mill rolling roll exports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a mild slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 36%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Russia prevails in exports structure, accounting for X units, which was approx. 88% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Armenia (X units) and Kazakhstan (X units), together mixing up a 12% share of total exports.

Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of rolls for rolling mills. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+55.6%) and Armenia (+14.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kazakhstan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +55.6% from 2012-2022. Armenia (+7.2 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (+4.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -10.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest mill rolling roll supplier in the CIS, comprising 100% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 0.4% share of total exports.

In Russia, mill rolling roll exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (+65.4% per year) and Armenia (+75.5% per year).

In 2022, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per unit, remaining stable against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 22%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per unit), while Armenia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Armenia (+53.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, purchases abroad of rolls for rolling mills was finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, saw a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 47%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, mill rolling roll imports amounted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 17%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Russia dominates imports structure, accounting for X units, which was near 81% of total imports in 2022. Kazakhstan (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 7.2% share, followed by Uzbekistan (5.4%). Tajikistan (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Russia decreased at an average annual rate of -1.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+18.6%) and Tajikistan (+6.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +18.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Kazakhstan (-5.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Uzbekistan (+5.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Kazakhstan saw its share reduced by -3.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported rolls for rolling mills in the CIS, comprising 88% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 7.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with a 2.7% share.

In Russia, mill rolling roll imports plunged by an average annual rate of -6.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (-7.6% per year) and Uzbekistan (+40.7% per year).
