Exports in CIS
For the sixth year in a row, the CIS recorded decline in shipments abroad of roundwood (coniferous), which decreased by -90.7% to X cubic meters in 2022. Overall, exports saw a sharp curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 12%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X cubic meters. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, coniferous roundwood exports fell rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a dramatic slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 8.8%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Belarus prevails in exports structure, recording X cubic meters, which was near 95% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X cubic meters), generating a 4.8% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to coniferous roundwood exports from Belarus stood at -4.0%. Kyrgyzstan (-1.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Belarus (+89 p.p.) and Kyrgyzstan (+4.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Belarus ($X) remains the largest coniferous roundwood supplier in the CIS, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 4% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Belarus totaled -4.9%.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the CIS stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, falling by -57.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 19%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per cubic meter, and then fell significantly in the following year.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per cubic meter), while Kyrgyzstan amounted to $X per cubic meter.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kyrgyzstan (+5.3%).
Coniferous Roundwood Imports
Imports in CIS
In 2022, coniferous roundwood imports in the CIS dropped remarkably to X cubic meters, with a decrease of -54.9% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a measured expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 110% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X cubic meters in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, coniferous roundwood imports reduced dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a slight reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 231% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Kazakhstan (X cubic meters) represented the key importer of roundwood (coniferous), generating 70% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X cubic meters), committing a 25% share of total imports. Belarus (X cubic meters) held a minor share of total imports.
Imports into Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Belarus (+20.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +20.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Uzbekistan (-16.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Uzbekistan (+25 p.p.) and Belarus (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest coniferous roundwood importing markets in the CIS were Uzbekistan ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Belarus ($X), together accounting for 94% of total imports.
Belarus, with a CAGR of +15.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per cubic meter, picking up by 2.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a pronounced slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 58% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per cubic meter), while Kazakhstan ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+2.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
