Safflower Seed Market Size in CIS

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was decline in the CIS safflower seed market, when its value decreased by -1.6% to $X. In 2022, shipments abroad of safflower seed increased by 11% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 363% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, safflower seed exports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 399%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 33% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced notably in the following year.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan totaled $X per ton.

Imports in CIS

For the third consecutive year, the CIS recorded growth in overseas purchases of safflower seed, which increased by 51% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 372% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, safflower seed imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 301% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Uzbekistan (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons) prevails in imports structure, together mixing up 94% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Tajikistan (X tons), making up a 5.9% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Kazakhstan (with a CAGR of +45.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest safflower seed importing markets in the CIS were Kazakhstan ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Tajikistan ($X), with a combined 100% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Kazakhstan, with a CAGR of +53.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -11.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 149% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+13.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
