The CIS salt market stood at $X in 2022, picking up by 7.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. In value terms, salt production rose slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 108%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then dropped notably in the following year.

In value terms, salt exports rose slightly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +52.3% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 48%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Belarus dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 93% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Russia (X tons), achieving a 5.2% share of total exports.

Exports from Belarus increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Russia (+5.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +5.2% from 2012-2022. Belarus (-2.4 p.p.) significantly weakened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Belarus ($X) remains the largest salt supplier in the CIS, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Russia ($X), with a 7.8% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Belarus was relatively modest.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 39% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Belarus totaled $X per ton.

In 2022, purchases abroad of salt and pure sodium chloride decreased by -3.2% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports recorded a noticeable decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 22% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, salt imports stood at $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 25%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Russia prevails in imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 89% of total imports in 2022. Moldova (X tons), Kazakhstan (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to salt imports into Russia stood at -3.1%. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+4.4%) and Belarus (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kazakhstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +4.4% from 2012-2022. Moldova experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Russia (-2.6 p.p.) significantly weakened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported salt and pure sodium chloride in the CIS, comprising 77% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 6.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Moldova, with a 6.7% share.

In Russia, salt imports shrank by an average annual rate of -4.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kazakhstan (+5.0% per year) and Moldova (+7.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 6.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 44%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Moldova (+8.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
