Exports in CIS

In 2022, overseas shipments of saturated acyclic hydrocarbons were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, saw a perceptible slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 66% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, saturated acyclic hydrocarbons exports fell modestly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 72%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Russia prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 87% of total exports in 2022. Kazakhstan (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Belarus (X tons). All these countries together held near 13% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to saturated acyclic hydrocarbons exports from Russia stood at -4.5%. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+30.8%) and Belarus (+20.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kazakhstan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +30.8% from 2012-2022. While the share of Kazakhstan (+6.5 p.p.) and Belarus (+5.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Russia (-12.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest saturated acyclic hydrocarbons supplier in the CIS, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with an 11% share of total exports.

In Russia, saturated acyclic hydrocarbons exports plunged by an average annual rate of -11.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (+19.9% per year) and Kazakhstan (+16.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -23.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 54% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (-0.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in CIS

In 2022, the amount of saturated acyclic hydrocarbons imported in the CIS surged to X tons, jumping by 43% compared with the previous year. Overall, imports posted a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 65%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, saturated acyclic hydrocarbons imports declined modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports posted a moderate expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 134%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Belarus was the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which finished at 56% of total imports. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 24% share, followed by Russia (13%). Kazakhstan (X tons), Azerbaijan (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Belarus increased at an average annual rate of +52.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Azerbaijan (+116.2%), Uzbekistan (+68.1%), Kyrgyzstan (+22.5%) and Kazakhstan (+18.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Azerbaijan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +116.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Russia (-10.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan increased by +54, +17, +1.9, +1.7 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Belarus ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported saturated acyclic hydrocarbons in the CIS, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Kyrgyzstan, with a 7.9% share.

In Belarus, saturated acyclic hydrocarbons imports increased at an average annual rate of +11.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Russia (-10.2% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (+23.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -29.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the import price increased by 145% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Azerbaijan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
