From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Uzbekistan totaled +13.5%.
In 2022, the average yield of sesame seed in the CIS shrank to X tons per ha, which is down by -3.2% compared with 2021. The yield indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, sesame seed yield increased by +3.8% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the yield increased by 45%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 90%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In 2022, exports of sesame seed in the CIS shrank modestly to X tons, falling by -1.6% against the year before. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 610% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sesame seed exports shrank markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 262% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Uzbekistan (X tons) was the largest exporter of sesame seed, constituting 56% of total exports. Russia (X tons) took a 37% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Belarus (5.7%).
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +53.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest sesame seed supplier in the CIS, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 12% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia stood at +34.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uzbekistan (+26.0% per year) and Belarus (-11.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -41.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 70% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (-4.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in CIS
In 2022, approx. X tons of sesame seed were imported in the CIS; with an increase of 4.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 39%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sesame seed imports totaled $X in 2022. In general, imports enjoyed a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 48% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Russia prevails in imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 76% of total imports in 2022. Uzbekistan (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Kyrgyzstan (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 13% share of total imports. The following importers - Kazakhstan (X tons), Azerbaijan (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) - together made up 8.9% of total imports.
Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+73.1%), Kyrgyzstan (+69.5%), Azerbaijan (+16.0%) and Belarus (+5.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +73.1% from 2012-2022. Kazakhstan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Uzbekistan (+8.2 p.p.) and Kyrgyzstan (+4.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Kazakhstan and Russia saw its share reduced by -3.4% and -12.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sesame seed in the CIS, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 5.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with a 5.2% share.
In Russia, sesame seed imports expanded at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (+9.7% per year) and Uzbekistan (+97.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -1.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 18%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
