In value terms, sheepskin and lambskin production declined sharply to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 72%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Russia (X tons), Kazakhstan (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons), with a combined 65% share of total production. Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Azerbaijan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Tajikistan (with a CAGR of +8.1%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average yield of sheep or lamb skins (without wool) in the CIS amounted to X kg per head, stabilizing at the year before. In general, the yield, however, showed a slight curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 3.2%. The level of yield peaked at X kg per head in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the yield remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, the number of animals slaughtered for sheepskin and lambskin production in the CIS totaled X heads, standing approx. at the year before. This number increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the number of producing animals increased by 6.6% against the previous year. The level of producing animals peaked at X heads in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, producing animals remained at a lower figure.

Exports in CIS

After eight years of decline, overseas shipments of sheep or lamb skins (without wool) increased by 15% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a precipitous decline. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sheepskin and lambskin exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a abrupt slump. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Azerbaijan represented the main exporter of sheep or lamb skins (without wool) in the CIS, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 65% of total exports in 2021. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 16% share, followed by Russia (6.6%). Moldova (X tons), Kazakhstan (X tons), Armenia (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

Exports from Azerbaijan decreased at an average annual rate of -13.1% from 2012 to 2021. Russia (-3.3%), Moldova (-6.1%), Armenia (-8.4%), Uzbekistan (-11.7%), Kazakhstan (-33.5%) and Kyrgyzstan (-39.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Azerbaijan (+52 p.p.), Russia (+6.1 p.p.), Moldova (+3.6 p.p.) and Armenia (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan saw its share reduced by -4.4% and -61.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Azerbaijan ($X) remains the largest sheepskin and lambskin supplier in the CIS, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Russia ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Kyrgyzstan, with a 4.1% share.

In Azerbaijan, sheepskin and lambskin exports contracted by an average annual rate of -12.6% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Russia (+9.0% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (-35.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price enjoyed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in CIS

After three years of decline, supplies from abroad of sheep or lamb skins (without wool) increased by 73% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 112% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sheepskin and lambskin imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 119%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Russia prevails in imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 92% of total imports in 2021. Belarus (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to sheepskin and lambskin imports into Russia stood at -17.0%. At the same time, Belarus (+16.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +16.7% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Belarus increased by +4.2 percentage points.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sheep or lamb skins (without wool) in the CIS, comprising 91% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 4.8% share of total imports.

In Russia, sheepskin and lambskin imports declined by an average annual rate of -13.0% over the period from 2012-2021.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -2.5% against the previous year. Import price indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period.
