Exports in CIS

In 2021, the amount of signalling flares, rain rockets, fog signals and other pyrotechnic articles exported in the CIS surged to X tons, growing by 267% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, exports, however, recorded a dramatic decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 307% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pyrotechnic articles exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a precipitous curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 386%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Azerbaijan (X tons) represented the major exporter of signalling flares, rain rockets, fog signals and other pyrotechnic articles, constituting 64% of total exports. Kazakhstan (X kg) took a 22% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Armenia (11%). Belarus (X kg) took a minor share of total exports.

Azerbaijan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the signalling flares, rain rockets, fog signals and other pyrotechnic articles exports, with a CAGR of +76.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Armenia (+26.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Belarus (-10.6%) and Kazakhstan (-17.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Armenia and Belarus increased by +64, +21, +11 and +3.1 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the largest pyrotechnic articles supplier in the CIS, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Azerbaijan ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 7.4% share.

In Kazakhstan, pyrotechnic articles exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Azerbaijan (+72.2% per year) and Belarus (-8.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -14.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 34% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Azerbaijan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+22.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in CIS

In 2021, supplies from abroad of signalling flares, rain rockets, fog signals and other pyrotechnic articles decreased by -51.6% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, imports faced a sharp descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 41% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pyrotechnic articles imports dropped remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 91%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Moldova (X tons) represented the largest importer of signalling flares, rain rockets, fog signals and other pyrotechnic articles, comprising 57% of total imports. Tajikistan (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Azerbaijan (X tons), Kazakhstan (X tons) and Belarus (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 41% share of total imports.

Imports into Moldova increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Azerbaijan (+14.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Azerbaijan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +14.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Belarus (-2.3%), Tajikistan (-4.8%) and Kazakhstan (-31.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Moldova (+51 p.p.), Tajikistan (+13 p.p.), Azerbaijan (+8.4 p.p.) and Belarus (+6.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Kazakhstan (-23.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Moldova ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported signalling flares, rain rockets, fog signals and other pyrotechnic articles in the CIS, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tajikistan ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Azerbaijan, with a 6.2% share.

In Moldova, pyrotechnic articles imports expanded at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tajikistan (-7.2% per year) and Azerbaijan (+8.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 46% against the previous year. Import price indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +9.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, pyrotechnic articles import price increased by +78.3% against 2018 indices. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Moldova ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
