In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in the CIS silk-worm cocoons market, when its value decreased by -0.8% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Exports in CIS

In 2022, approx. X tons of silk-worm cocoons (reelable) were exported in the CIS; with a decrease of -51.2% against the year before. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 565% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

In value terms, silk-worm cocoons exports shrank notably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 569% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then shrank significantly in the following year.

Tajikistan represented the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 57% of total exports. Kazakhstan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 30% share, followed by Azerbaijan (9.1%). Kyrgyzstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Kazakhstan (with a CAGR of +34.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, the largest silk-worm cocoons supplying countries in the CIS were Tajikistan ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Azerbaijan ($X), with a combined 96% share of total exports.

Kazakhstan, with a CAGR of +33.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In 2022, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -7.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 32% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Azerbaijan ($X per ton), while Tajikistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (+20.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in CIS

Silk-worm cocoons imports fell remarkably to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of -43.9% against the previous year. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 415%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, silk-worm cocoons imports reduced rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 411% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 95% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X tons), achieving a 5.4% share of total imports.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the silk-worm cocoons (reelable) imports, with a CAGR of +54.8% from 2012 to 2022. Kyrgyzstan (-16.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Kazakhstan (+91 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Kyrgyzstan (-91.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported silk-worm cocoons (reelable) in the CIS, comprising 99% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 0.7% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Kazakhstan amounted to +27.3%.

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -5.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 82% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
