In 2021, after three years of decline, there was growth in the CIS skim milk market, when its value increased by 0.4% to $X. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a mild decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the market value increased by 8.2% against the previous year. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Skim Milk Production in CIS

In 2021, overseas shipments of skim milk decreased by -22% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 1,238%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, skim milk exports fell to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 533% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Belarus was the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 69% of total exports. Russia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Kazakhstan (X tons). All these countries together held near 28% share of total exports. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

Exports from Belarus increased at an average annual rate of +64.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+90.0%), Kazakhstan (+36.3%) and Russia (+12.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +90.0% from 2012-2021. Belarus (+58 p.p.), Kyrgyzstan (+2.9 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -62.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Belarus ($X) remains the largest skim milk supplier in the CIS, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with a 24% share of total exports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with a 14% share.

In Belarus, skim milk exports expanded at an average annual rate of +24.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Russia (+6.8% per year) and Kazakhstan (+25.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, surging by 19% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 25% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

After two years of decline, purchases abroad of skim milk increased by 19% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports enjoyed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 245%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, skim milk imports amounted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 169% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Russia (X tons) and Moldova (X tons) were the main importers of skim milk in the CIS, together committing 86% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), comprising a 12% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Moldova (with a CAGR of +26.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
