Slate Market Size in CIS

The CIS slate market rose modestly to $X in 2021, surging by 2% against the previous year. Kazakhstan was the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 74% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Russia (X tons), achieving a 25% share of total exports.

Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the slate exports, with a CAGR of -2.4% from 2012 to 2021. Russia (-33.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Kazakhstan (+65 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Russia (-65.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the largest slate supplier in the CIS, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with a 27% share of total exports.

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -13.4% against the previous year. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, slate export price decreased by -17.7% against 2019 indices. Slate imports skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, growing by 29% on 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 68% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, slate imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a perceptible slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Russia (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) represented the main importers of slate in the CIS, together recording approx. 83% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Moldova (X tons), mixing up a 17% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Russia (with a CAGR of +8.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.
