Snail Market Size in CIS

In 2022, the CIS snail market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, consumption, however, saw a pronounced decline. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Snail Production in CIS

In value terms, snail production fell to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the production volume increased by 17%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Snail Exports

Exports in CIS

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of snails (except sea snails), when their volume decreased by -12.6% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 326%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, snail exports declined markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 229%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Belarus represented the main exporter of snails (except sea snails) in the CIS, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 66% of total exports in 2022. Russia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 21% share, followed by Moldova (10%). Azerbaijan (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

Exports from Belarus increased at an average annual rate of +11.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Russia (+145.5%) and Moldova (+6.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +145.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Azerbaijan (-37.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Russia and Azerbaijan increased by +21 and +2.4 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Belarus ($X) remains the largest snail supplier in the CIS, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with a 6.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Moldova, with a 3.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Belarus totaled +6.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Russia (+76.7% per year) and Moldova (+7.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -11.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 89%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Moldova (+0.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Snail Imports

Imports in CIS

In 2022, snail imports in the CIS surged to X tons, increasing by 76% against the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 11,702%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, snail imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a slight downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 137%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Armenia (X tons) and Russia (X tons) prevails in imports structure, together constituting 91% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Moldova (X kg), achieving a 6.6% share of total imports. Azerbaijan (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Armenia (with a CAGR of +74.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, Russia ($X), Moldova ($X) and Armenia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 98% share of total imports.

Moldova, with a CAGR of +85.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, approximately equating the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 1,072%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Moldova ($X per ton), while Armenia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Moldova (+54.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
