Soap Market Size in CIS

For the fourth year in a row, the CIS soap market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 3.8% to $X in 2021. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Soap Production in CIS

In value terms, soap production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 21% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then declined in the following year.

In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of soap, when their volume decreased by -13.6% to X tons. Total exports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +85.2% against 2014 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, soap exports stood at $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Russia prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 88% of total exports in 2021. Belarus (X tons) took a 5.9% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Kazakhstan (4.9%).

Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the soap exports, with a CAGR of +4.9% from 2012 to 2021. Belarus experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Kazakhstan (-7.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Russia (+17 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Kazakhstan saw its share reduced by -7.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest soap supplier in the CIS, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 7.9% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia stood at +5.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (+1.3% per year) and Kazakhstan (-7.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 19% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+0.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of soap, when their volume decreased by -8.1% to X tons. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 9%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, soap imports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Russia represented the key importer of soap in the CIS, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 45% of total imports in 2021. Kazakhstan (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), Tajikistan (X tons) and Azerbaijan (X tons). All these countries together held near 43% share of total imports. The following importers - Uzbekistan (X tons) and Moldova (X tons) - together made up 7.5% of total imports.

Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of soap. At the same time, Belarus (+11.2%), Kazakhstan (+1.2%) and Azerbaijan (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +11.2% from 2012-2021. Tajikistan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Moldova (-4.7%) and Uzbekistan (-5.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Belarus and Uzbekistan increased by +5 and +4.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported soap in the CIS, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 7.3% share.

In Russia, soap imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (+2.2% per year) and Belarus (+5.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Tajikistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
