In 2021, overseas shipments of caustic soda in the solid form increased by 14% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, exports of caustic soda in the solid form soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports of caustic soda in solid form hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The biggest shipments were from Russia (X tons), together recording 99% of total export.

Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of caustic soda in the solid form. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) also remains the largest caustic soda in the solid form supplier in the CIS.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia was relatively modest.

In 2021, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 24% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 38% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Russia.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Russia amounted to +0.9% per year.

In 2021, purchases abroad of caustic soda in the solid form decreased by -17.7% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 43%. Over the period under review, imports of caustic soda in solid form attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, imports of caustic soda in the solid form totaled $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 36% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Kazakhstan (X tons), distantly followed by Russia (X tons), Uzbekistan (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) represented the main importers of caustic soda in the solid form, together mixing up 89% of total imports. The following importers - Azerbaijan (X tons), Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Armenia (X tons) - together made up 8.6% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Armenia (with a CAGR of +6.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Belarus ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 71% share of total imports. Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan and Armenia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Azerbaijan, with a CAGR of +5.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 23% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kyrgyzstan (+2.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
