In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of sorbitol (excluding d-glucitol), when their volume decreased by -33% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 424%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then fell notably in the following year.

In value terms, sorbitol exports dropped modestly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 279% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

Russia dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 92% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), creating a 7.2% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to sorbitol exports from Russia stood at +19.8%. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+36.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kazakhstan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +36.8% from 2012-2021. While the share of Kazakhstan (+7.2 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest sorbitol supplier in the CIS, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 3.4% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia amounted to +20.4%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 47% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+29.0%).

In 2021, purchases abroad of sorbitol (excluding d-glucitol) increased by 11% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after five years of decline. In general, imports saw strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 390%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, sorbitol imports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 110% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Russia dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 88% of total imports in 2021. Azerbaijan (X tons), Kazakhstan (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to sorbitol imports into Russia stood at +16.9%. At the same time, Azerbaijan (+36.7%), Uzbekistan (+27.0%) and Kazakhstan (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Azerbaijan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +36.7% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Russia, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan increased by +4, +3.4 and +2.9 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sorbitol (excluding d-glucitol) in the CIS, comprising 85% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Azerbaijan ($X), with a 6.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with a 4.3% share.

In Russia, sorbitol imports expanded at an average annual rate of +16.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Azerbaijan (+45.2% per year) and Kazakhstan (+0.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 2% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 92% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Azerbaijan ($X per ton) and Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) and Uzbekistan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (+6.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
