Total exports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -4.6% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 81% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, spades and shovels exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw perceptible growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 84%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Russia (X tons) represented the major exporter of spades and shovels, generating 76% of total exports. Belarus (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 12% share, followed by Uzbekistan (6.5%) and Armenia (5.4%).

Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of spades and shovels. At the same time, Armenia (+322.9%) and Belarus (+33.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Armenia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +322.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Uzbekistan (-4.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Belarus, Uzbekistan and Armenia increased by +11, +6.5 and +5.4 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest spades and shovels supplier in the CIS, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Armenia, with a 2.8% share.

In Russia, spades and shovels exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (+27.9% per year) and Armenia (+515.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 35% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Armenia (+45.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in CIS

In 2021, approx. X tons of spades and shovels were imported in the CIS; shrinking by -7.7% compared with the year before. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 151%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, spades and shovels imports totaled $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 106% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Russia was the main importer of spades and shovels in the CIS, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 56% of total imports in 2021. Kazakhstan (X tons) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Uzbekistan (9%), Belarus (5.8%) and Kyrgyzstan (5.5%). The following importers - Azerbaijan (X tons) and Armenia (X tons) - together made up 6.2% of total imports.

Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of +13.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Azerbaijan (+32.6%), Uzbekistan (+12.2%), Armenia (+6.7%) and Belarus (+6.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Azerbaijan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +32.6% from 2012-2021. Kazakhstan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Kyrgyzstan (-2.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Russia, Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan increased by +20, +9 and +3.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported spades and shovels in the CIS, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 7.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia totaled +7.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (+0.9% per year) and Belarus (+5.9% per year).

In 2021, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 15% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible decline. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
