In 2021, Russia (X tons) was the main exporter of spectacle lenses of glass or other materials, comprising 66% of total exports. Belarus (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 22% share, followed by Azerbaijan (8.8%). Kazakhstan (X kg) took a relatively small share of total exports.
Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the spectacle lenses of glass or other materials exports, with a CAGR of +22.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+19.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Azerbaijan (-1.7%) and Belarus (-27.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest spectacle glass lenses supplier in the CIS, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 6.3% share of total exports. It was followed by Azerbaijan, with a 3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia amounted to +30.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (-22.5% per year) and Azerbaijan (+3.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 60% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 84% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, purchases abroad of spectacle lenses of glass or other materials increased by 12% to X tons, rising for the fifth year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, spectacle glass lenses imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +81.7% against 2016 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Russia dominates imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 79% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons) and Belarus (X tons), together mixing up a 16% share of total imports. The following importers - Armenia (X tons) and Moldova (X tons) - each recorded a 4% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to spectacle glass lenses imports into Russia stood at -1.4%. At the same time, Armenia (+18.6%), Kazakhstan (+3.8%) and Moldova (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Armenia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +18.6% from 2012-2021. Belarus experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Kazakhstan and Armenia increased by +3.3 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported spectacle lenses of glass or other materials in the CIS, comprising 85% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with an 8.2% share of total imports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with a 3.6% share.
In Russia, spectacle glass lenses imports increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belarus (+5.4% per year) and Kazakhstan (+12.7% per year).
