In 2021, purchases abroad of stranded wire, ropes and cables was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, stranded wire imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 28%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, Russia (X tons) was the key importer of stranded wire, ropes and cables, committing 59% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), Uzbekistan (X tons), Belarus (X tons) and Azerbaijan (X tons), together achieving a 35% share of total imports. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Armenia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+15.6%) and Armenia (+12.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +15.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kazakhstan (-1.6%), Azerbaijan (-4.1%), Belarus (-5.1%) and Kyrgyzstan (-5.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Uzbekistan and Russia increased by +6.8 and +3.3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported stranded wire, ropes and cables in the CIS, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with a 7.7% share.

In Russia, stranded wire imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kazakhstan (-1.4% per year) and Uzbekistan (+18.9% per year).

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a mild setback. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Uzbekistan ($X per ton) and Armenia ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) and Azerbaijan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
