Sugar Beet Market Size in CIS
The CIS sugar beet market shrank to $X in 2022, waning by -6.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed a pronounced curtailment. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Sugar Beet Production in CIS
In value terms, sugar beet production rose rapidly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 90% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
Russia (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of sugar beet production, accounting for 87% of total volume. Moreover, sugar beet production in Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Belarus (X tons), tenfold.
In Russia, sugar beet production shrank by an average annual rate of -1.8% over the period from 2012-2022.
The average sugar beet yield reduced modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, waning by -4.2% on 2021. Overall, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the yield increased by 24% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the sugar beet yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
The sugar beet harvested area reduced to X ha in 2022, which is down by -3.7% on the previous year's figure. Overall, the harvested area recorded a slight contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 8.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to sugar beet production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.
Sugar Beet Exports
Exports in CIS
In 2022, approx. X tons of sugar beet were exported in the CIS; picking up by 2,159% compared with the previous year. Overall, exports, however, saw a sharp curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 95,178%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sugar beet exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a precipitous descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 3,678%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Uzbekistan dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 98% of total exports in 2022. Russia (X kg) held a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to sugar beet exports from Uzbekistan stood at -29.3%. At the same time, Russia (+17.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +17.1% from 2012-2022. While the share of Uzbekistan (+97 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) emerged as the largest sugar beet supplier in the CIS, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with a 7.5% share of total exports.
In Uzbekistan, sugar beet exports contracted by an average annual rate of -29.3% over the period from 2012-2022.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -62.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 59,851%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (-11.2%).
Sugar Beet Imports
Imports in CIS
In 2022, overseas purchases of sugar beet increased by 455% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, recorded a precipitous decrease. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, sugar beet imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a sharp downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 214%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Armenia represented the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 85% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), making up an 11% share of total imports. Belarus (X kg) held a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to sugar beet imports into Armenia stood at -10.2%. At the same time, Belarus (+26.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +26.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Kazakhstan (-3.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Armenia, Kazakhstan and Belarus increased by +85, +11 and +2.3 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Armenia ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Belarus ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 69% of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Belarus, with a CAGR of +23.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -62.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a pronounced reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 93%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced notably in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Armenia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+2.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
