Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a mild slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 424% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sulphur exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports posted a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 347%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Kazakhstan prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 93% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), constituting a 6.6% share of total exports.

Exports from Kazakhstan decreased at an average annual rate of -1.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Belarus (+98.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +98.0% from 2012-2021. Belarus (+6.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Kazakhstan saw its share reduced by -6.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the largest sulphur supplier in the CIS, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 12% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Kazakhstan stood at +16.1%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -14.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 165% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+18.0%).

Imports in CIS

Sulphur imports surged to X tons in 2021, picking up by 121% against the previous year. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 696%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sulphur imports totaled $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 1,205%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Moldova represented the key importer of sulphur (sublimed or precipitated) and colloidal sulphur in the CIS, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 55% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons) and Armenia (X tons), together generating a 42% share of total imports. Russia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Moldova was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sulphur (sublimed or precipitated) and colloidal sulphur imports, with a CAGR of +50.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Belarus (+31.0%) and Armenia (+17.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Russia (-34.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Moldova, Belarus and Armenia increased by +54, +23 and +14 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Moldova ($X), Belarus ($X) and Russia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 95% of total imports.

Moldova, with a CAGR of +53.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -49.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 392%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Armenia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+6.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
