Talc and steatite exports declined to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of -6% compared with the year before. In general, exports continue to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, talc and steatite exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 34%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Russia dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 97% of total exports in 2022. Uzbekistan (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.
Exports from Russia decreased at an average annual rate of -2.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+207.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +207.7% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Uzbekistan increased by +1.6 percentage points.
In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest talc and steatite supplier in the CIS, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 3.9% share of total exports.
In Russia, talc and steatite exports decreased by an average annual rate of -4.6% over the period from 2012-2022.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a mild decrease. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Russia totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+4.1%).

Imports in CIS
In 2022, approx. X tons of talc and steatite were imported in the CIS; which is down by -3% on 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 97%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then contracted slightly in the following year.
In value terms, talc and steatite imports fell slightly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 105%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell slightly in the following year.
Imports by Country
Russia dominates imports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 75% of total imports in 2022. Uzbekistan (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Kazakhstan (X tons) and Belarus (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 22% share of total imports. Azerbaijan (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to talc and steatite imports into Russia stood at +6.5%. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+17.2%), Uzbekistan (+14.4%) and Azerbaijan (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kazakhstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +17.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Belarus (-5.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan increased by +9.9 and +4.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported talc and steatite in the CIS, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 7.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with a 7.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia stood at +10.0%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kazakhstan (+14.8% per year) and Uzbekistan (+8.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Azerbaijan ($X per ton) and Russia ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) and Kazakhstan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (+12.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
