Tea Market Size in CIS
The CIS tea market fell modestly to $X in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a noticeable slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 2.8%. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Tea Production in CIS
In value terms, tea production fell rapidly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production saw a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
Azerbaijan (X kg) remains the largest tea producing country in the CIS, accounting for 100% of total volume.
In Azerbaijan, tea production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022.
Tea Exports
Exports in CIS
In 2022, shipments abroad of tea decreased by -7.7% to X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a six-year rising trend. Total exports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +55.0% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, tea exports reduced to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Russia represented the key exporter of tea in the CIS, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 78% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), generating a 14% share of total exports. The following exporters - Belarus (X tons) and Azerbaijan (X tons) - each finished at a 7.1% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to tea exports from Russia stood at +5.4%. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+13.7%) and Belarus (+12.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kazakhstan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +13.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Azerbaijan (-16.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Russia (+16 p.p.), Kazakhstan (+9 p.p.) and Belarus (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Azerbaijan saw its share reduced by -26.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest tea supplier in the CIS, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Azerbaijan, with a 5.4% share.
In Russia, tea exports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kazakhstan (+11.6% per year) and Azerbaijan (-13.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 2.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 9.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Azerbaijan ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (+3.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Tea Imports
Imports in CIS
In 2022, supplies from abroad of tea decreased by -0.3% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a mild contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 3.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, tea imports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a pronounced slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 3.7%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Russia represented the major importer of tea in the CIS, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 64% of total imports in 2022. Kazakhstan (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Uzbekistan (X tons) and Azerbaijan (X tons). All these countries together took near 29% share of total imports. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
Imports into Russia decreased at an average annual rate of -1.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Azerbaijan (+5.8%) and Kyrgyzstan (+4.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Azerbaijan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +5.8% from 2012-2022. Belarus experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Kazakhstan (-1.1%) and Uzbekistan (-2.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Azerbaijan increased by +3 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported tea in the CIS, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Azerbaijan, with an 11% share.
In Russia, tea imports plunged by an average annual rate of -4.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kazakhstan (-2.9% per year) and Azerbaijan (+14.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, standing approx. at the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a slight slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the import price increased by 7.1% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
