The CIS titanium ore and concentrate market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after two years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a perceptible decline. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Production of Titanium Ores and Concentrates in CIS

In value terms, titanium ore and concentrate production surged to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 93% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of titanium ores and concentrates increased by 62% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a sharp curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 293% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, titanium ore and concentrate exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a dramatic contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 147%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Kazakhstan (X tons) and Russia (X tons) represented the largest exporters of titanium ores and concentrates in the CIS, together achieving 87% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons), constituting an 11% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +29,701.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, the largest titanium ore and concentrate supplying countries in the CIS were Kazakhstan ($X), Russia ($X) and Uzbekistan ($X), with a combined 98% share of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +990.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 9.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 132% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+12.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in CIS

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was growth in purchases abroad of titanium ores and concentrates, when their volume increased by 1.1% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 120%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, titanium ore and concentrate imports rose significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 74% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Russia represented the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which resulted at 88% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), achieving a 12% share of total imports.

Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the titanium ores and concentrates imports, with a CAGR of -2.5% from 2012 to 2022. Kazakhstan (-6.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Russia increased by +4 percentage points.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported titanium ores and concentrates in the CIS, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 24% share of total imports.
