In 2022, the CIS tomato puree market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. In general, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.
Tomato Puree Production in CIS
In value terms, tomato puree production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the production volume increased by 31%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in CIS
After six years of growth, shipments abroad of tomato puree and paste decreased by -10.7% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 157%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, tomato puree exports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 103%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
Exports by Country
Russia was the key exporter of tomato puree and paste in the CIS, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near 54% of total exports in 2022. Kazakhstan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 23% share, followed by Kyrgyzstan (12%). The following exporters - Azerbaijan (X tons), Armenia (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) - together made up 8.6% of total exports.
Exports from Russia increased at an average annual rate of +24.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Belarus (+39.2%), Kyrgyzstan (+34.1%), Kazakhstan (+16.1%) and Azerbaijan (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +39.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Armenia (-5.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Russia and Kyrgyzstan increased by +24 and +9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest tomato puree supplying countries in the CIS were Russia ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Azerbaijan ($X), together accounting for 85% of total exports. Kyrgyzstan, Armenia and Belarus lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 11%.
Belarus, with a CAGR of +36.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, rising by 2.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 12% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Azerbaijan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+7.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in CIS
In 2022, overseas purchases of tomato puree and paste increased by 4.1% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a perceptible descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 16%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, tomato puree imports reached $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 23%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Russia (X tons) was the main importer of tomato puree and paste, creating 72% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), achieving a 17% share of total imports. Belarus (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to tomato puree imports into Russia stood at -4.0%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+8.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +8.6% from 2012-2022. Kazakhstan and Belarus experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan increased by +4.9 and +2.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported tomato puree and paste in the CIS, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 5.8% share.
In Russia, tomato puree imports plunged by an average annual rate of -4.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (+4.3% per year) and Belarus (+2.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 4.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 9.3% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+11.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
