Tomato Market Size in CIS

The CIS tomato market expanded remarkably to $X in 2021, growing by 13% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a mild decrease. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Tomato Production in CIS

In value terms, tomato production skyrocketed to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a pronounced decline. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Russia (X tons), Uzbekistan (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons), together accounting for 75% of total production. These countries were followed by Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, Belarus and Kyrgyzstan, which together accounted for a further 23%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Azerbaijan (with a CAGR of +5.1%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average tomato yield amounted to X tons per ha in 2021, standing approx. at 2020. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the yield increased by 9%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, approx. X ha of tomatoes were harvested in the CIS; approximately mirroring 2020. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, saw a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 2.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to tomato production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in CIS

In 2021, shipments abroad of tomatoes decreased by -16.7% to X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 80% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, tomato exports contracted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 72% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Azerbaijan (X tons) was the main exporter of tomatoes, constituting 44% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons), Armenia (X tons), Belarus (X tons), Kazakhstan (X tons) and Russia (X tons), together achieving a 55% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Armenia (with a CAGR of +122.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Azerbaijan ($X) remains the largest tomato supplier in the CIS, comprising 49% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uzbekistan ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Armenia, with a 14% share.

In Azerbaijan, tomato exports expanded at an average annual rate of +26.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Uzbekistan (+10.4% per year) and Armenia (+120.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 7.7% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 17%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Armenia ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (+8.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in CIS

Tomato imports declined to X tons in 2021, dropping by -13.6% against 2020. In general, imports continue to indicate a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 8.1%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, tomato imports contracted to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a pronounced curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 19%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Russia dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was near 82% of total imports in 2021. Belarus (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Kyrgyzstan (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 11% share of total imports. Kazakhstan (X tons) and Moldova (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

Imports into Russia decreased at an average annual rate of -6.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+58.3%) and Kazakhstan (+4.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +58.3% from 2012-2021. Moldova experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Belarus (-4.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan increased by +4.6 and +2.4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported tomatoes in the CIS, comprising 83% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 7.2% share of total imports. It was followed by Kyrgyzstan, with a 3.2% share.

In Russia, tomato imports declined by an average annual rate of -4.2% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belarus (-0.0% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (+71.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 3.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the import price increased by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
