Toy Market Size in CIS

The CIS toy market expanded rapidly to $X in 2021, picking up by 9.9% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, overseas shipments of dolls and toys decreased by -0.9% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, saw a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 56%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then declined modestly in the following year.

In value terms, toy exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 71%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Belarus (X tons) represented the main exporter of dolls and toys, making up 60% of total exports. Russia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 33% share, followed by Moldova (5.2%).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Russia (with a CAGR of +19.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia ($X), Belarus ($X) and Moldova ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 95% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Russia, with a CAGR of +19.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 25% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (-0.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

After three years of decline, purchases abroad of dolls and toys increased by 14% to X tons in 2021. Total imports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -33.7% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 71% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Russia represented the key importer of dolls and toys in the CIS, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was near 69% of total imports in 2021. Kazakhstan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 18% share, followed by Belarus (6.5%). Azerbaijan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Azerbaijan (+35.0%), Belarus (+15.6%) and Kazakhstan (+6.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Azerbaijan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +35.0% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Kazakhstan, Belarus and Azerbaijan increased by +5.2, +4.2 and +2 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported dolls and toys in the CIS, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 23% share of total imports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia amounted to +1.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kazakhstan (+23.3% per year) and Belarus (+9.1% per year).

In 2021, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 29% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the import price increased by 29%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Azerbaijan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
