The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 196%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

In 2021, Russia (X tons) represented the key exporter of tuna (prepared or preserved), committing 64% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Tajikistan (X tons), generating a 35% share of total exports.

Imports in CIS
In 2021, purchases abroad of tuna (prepared or preserved) decreased by -2.8% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -13.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 57% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, preserved tuna imports rose modestly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -21.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 72%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Russia dominates imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 82% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), creating a 7.6% share of total imports. Moldova (X tons), Kazakhstan (X tons) and Azerbaijan (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Azerbaijan (+19.5%), Moldova (+15.7%) and Belarus (+15.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Azerbaijan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +19.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kazakhstan (-2.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Belarus (+4.2 p.p.) and Moldova (+2.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Kazakhstan and Russia saw its share reduced by -3.1% and -5.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported tuna (prepared or preserved) in the CIS, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 7% share of total imports. It was followed by Moldova, with a 6.2% share.
In Russia, preserved tuna imports increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belarus (+11.5% per year) and Moldova (+15.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 6.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 21%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Moldova ($X per ton), while Azerbaijan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (+9.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
