Vegetable Product Market Size in CIS

In 2022, the CIS vegetable product market increased by 13% to $X, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption recorded noticeable growth. The level of consumption peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Vegetable Product Production in CIS

In value terms, vegetable product production reduced markedly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +48.8% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 54% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Tajikistan (X tons), Kazakhstan (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons), with a combined 88% share of total production. Kyrgyzstan and Moldova lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 10%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Kyrgyzstan (with a CAGR of +10.3%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average vegetable product yield soared to X tons per ha in 2022, increasing by 22% against 2021 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the vegetable product yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of vegetable products production in the CIS contracted to X ha, waning by -6.1% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, the harvested area, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the harvested area increased by 15%. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha, and then contracted in the following year.

Exports in CIS

After two years of decline, overseas shipments of vegetable products increased by 24% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 385% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, vegetable product exports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, exports enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 642% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Tajikistan prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 77% of total exports in 2022. Russia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Uzbekistan (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 14% share of total exports. The following exporters - Kyrgyzstan (X tons), Armenia (X tons) and Moldova (X tons) - together made up 7% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to vegetable product exports from Tajikistan stood at +29.7%. At the same time, Russia (+36.0%), Kyrgyzstan (+7.7%) and Armenia (+3.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +36.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Moldova (-2.4%) and Uzbekistan (-14.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tajikistan (+28 p.p.), Uzbekistan (+7 p.p.), Russia (+4.4 p.p.) and Kyrgyzstan (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Armenia (-13.2 p.p.) and Moldova (-15 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Tajikistan ($X) remains the largest vegetable product supplier in the CIS, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with an 8.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Tajikistan totaled +27.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Russia (+32.0% per year) and Uzbekistan (-2.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -26% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the export price increased by 76%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Armenia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Armenia (+24.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in CIS

In 2022, approx. X tons of vegetable products were imported in the CIS; growing by 122% against 2021 figures. In general, imports posted a strong expansion. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, vegetable product imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports enjoyed a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 36%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Russia (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons) represented the key importers of vegetable products in 2022, finishing at approx. 38% and 36% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), generating a 21% share of total imports. Belarus (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +716.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported vegetable products in the CIS, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Belarus, with an 8.5% share.

In Russia, vegetable product imports expanded at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kazakhstan (+9.5% per year) and Belarus (+15.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -39.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 24%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+1.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
