Total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +67.1% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 25%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports by Country

Russia was the main importer of wadding of textile materials and articles thereof in the CIS, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was near 50% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), Kyrgyzstan (X tons), Belarus (X tons) and Azerbaijan (X tons), together constituting a 43% share of total imports. Uzbekistan (X tons) and Tajikistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tajikistan (+33.9%), Kyrgyzstan (+22.5%), Azerbaijan (+21.2%), Kazakhstan (+13.6%), Uzbekistan (+13.4%) and Belarus (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tajikistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +33.9% from 2012-2021. Kyrgyzstan (+10 p.p.), Kazakhstan (+6.5 p.p.), Azerbaijan (+3.3 p.p.) and Tajikistan (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Belarus and Russia saw its share reduced by -2.2% and -20.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
