Waferboard Market Size in CIS

In 2021, the CIS waferboard market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a pronounced decline. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Waferboard Production in CIS

In value terms, waferboard production expanded significantly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in CIS

In 2021, the amount of waferboards exported in the CIS rose markedly to X cubic meters, with an increase of 9.8% on 2020. Overall, exports posted a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 58%. The volume of export peaked at X cubic meters in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, waferboard exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports posted strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 71%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Russia represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X cubic meters, which resulted at 67% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X cubic meters), constituting a 33% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to waferboard exports from Russia stood at +10.1%. At the same time, Belarus (+22.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +22.2% from 2012-2021. While the share of Belarus (+17 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Russia (-17 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest waferboard supplier in the CIS, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 30% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia amounted to +9.5%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per cubic meter in 2021, surging by 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per cubic meter), while Belarus stood at $X per cubic meter.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+1.4%).

Waferboard Imports

Imports in CIS

Waferboard imports skyrocketed to X cubic meters in 2021, jumping by 29% on 2020 figures. Total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 36%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, waferboard imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports enjoyed tangible growth. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Kazakhstan (X cubic meters), distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X cubic meters), Russia (X cubic meters), Azerbaijan (X cubic meters), Belarus (X cubic meters), Tajikistan (X cubic meters), Kyrgyzstan (X cubic meters) and Moldova (X cubic meters) were the largest importers of waferboards, together making up 96% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +15.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Russia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 64% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +20.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per cubic meter in 2021, picking up by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a mild slump. The level of import peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per cubic meter), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
