The CIS walnut market rose rapidly to $X in 2021, surging by 6.1% against the previous year. Moreover, walnut production in Uzbekistan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Belarus (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Moldova (X tons), with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Uzbekistan amounted to +5.1%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Belarus (-0.2% per year) and Moldova (+6.7% per year).

The average walnut yield was estimated at X tons per ha in 2021, approximately mirroring 2020 figures. Over the period under review, the yield, however, saw a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 8.7% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the walnut yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The total harvested area indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, walnut harvested area decreased by -0.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to walnut production reached the maximum at X ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in CIS

In 2021, the amount of walnuts exported in the CIS reached X tons, surging by 2.8% on 2020. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 207% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, walnut exports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 175%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) were the key exporters of walnuts in the CIS, together amounting to near 76% of total exports. Russia (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Moldova (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 22% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Belarus (with a CAGR of +202.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest walnut supplying countries in the CIS were Belarus ($X), Kyrgyzstan ($X) and Moldova ($X), together accounting for 82% of total exports.

Belarus, with a CAGR of +177.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, surging by 11% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Moldova ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Moldova (+1.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, approx. X tons of walnuts were imported in the CIS; with an increase of 29% compared with the previous year. In general, imports enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 168% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, walnut imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports posted a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 82%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In 2021, Kazakhstan (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons) were the key importers of walnuts in the CIS, together committing 67% of total imports. Russia (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by Belarus (6.9%), Moldova (6.3%) and Azerbaijan (6.2%).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Kyrgyzstan (with a CAGR of +243.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X), Russia ($X) and Kyrgyzstan ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 70% share of total imports.

Kyrgyzstan, with a CAGR of +226.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, waning by -7.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 49%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
