Waterproof Footwear Market Size in CIS

In 2022, the CIS waterproof footwear market increased by 7.4% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a perceptible curtailment. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of waterproof footwear decreased by -17.1% to X pairs, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports, however, showed a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 322%. The volume of export peaked at X pairs in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, waterproof footwear exports contracted modestly to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a mild shrinkage. Uzbekistan represented the largest exporter of waterproof footwear in the CIS, with the volume of exports finishing at X pairs, which was approx. 62% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Russia (X pairs), achieving a 35% share of total exports.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per pair), while Uzbekistan stood at $X per pair.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+10.7%).

Imports in CIS

In 2022, the amount of waterproof footwear imported in the CIS dropped to X pairs, declining by -11.1% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 60% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X pairs. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, waterproof footwear imports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 68%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Kyrgyzstan represented the key importer of waterproof footwear in the CIS, with the volume of imports amounting to X pairs, which was near 52% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Russia (X pairs), Belarus (X pairs), Kazakhstan (X pairs), Moldova (X pairs) and Armenia (X pairs), together achieving a 42% share of total imports. Azerbaijan (X pairs) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to waterproof footwear imports into Kyrgyzstan stood at +4.8%. At the same time, Moldova (+12.5%), Azerbaijan (+6.6%), Belarus (+5.2%) and Armenia (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Moldova emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +12.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Russia (-6.6%) and Kazakhstan (-14.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Kyrgyzstan (+21 p.p.), Belarus (+4 p.p.), Moldova (+3.5 p.p.) and Azerbaijan (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Russia (-16 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (-17.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Kyrgyzstan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 76% of total imports. Belarus, Moldova, Azerbaijan and Armenia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.

Azerbaijan, with a CAGR of +21.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per pair, increasing by 5.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a noticeable descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 11% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per pair in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per pair), while Armenia ($X per pair) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (+13.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
