Whisky Market Size in CIS

After five years of growth, the CIS whisky market decreased by -2.6% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate modest growth. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Whisky Production in CIS

In value terms, whisky production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 16%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, exports of whisky in the CIS shrank notably to X litres, with a decrease of -50.2% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, exports, however, saw a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 317%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X litres in 2021, and then fell significantly in the following year.

In value terms, whisky exports declined remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 216% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, overseas purchases of whisky decreased by -5.2% to X litres for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 86% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X litres in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, whisky imports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 36%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Imports by Country

Russia dominates imports structure, reaching X litres, which was approx. 89% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X litres), making up a 5.1% share of total imports. Kazakhstan (X litres) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to whisky imports into Russia stood at +5.7%. At the same time, Belarus (+15.7%) and Kazakhstan (+6.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +15.7% from 2012-2022. While the share of Belarus (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Russia (-3.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported whisky in the CIS, comprising 85% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 6.3% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (+12.3% per year) and Kazakhstan (+1.3% per year).
