Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X litres in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, wine of fresh grapes exports declined slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 29%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Moldova dominates exports structure, amounting to X litres, which was approx. 82% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Armenia (X litres), generating a 7% share of total exports. The following exporters - Azerbaijan (X litres), Russia (X litres) and Uzbekistan (X litres) - together made up 10% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to wine of fresh grapes exports from Moldova stood at -2.3%. At the same time, Russia (+38.5%) and Armenia (+15.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +38.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Azerbaijan (-2.6%) and Uzbekistan (-26.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Armenia (+5.5 p.p.), Russia (+3.1 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Moldova (-11.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Moldova ($X) remains the largest wine of fresh grapes supplier in the CIS, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Armenia ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Russia, with a 4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Moldova totaled -1.3%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Armenia (+16.1% per year) and Russia (+30.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the CIS stood at $X per litre in 2022, rising by 9% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Armenia ($X per litre), while Uzbekistan ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+17.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in CIS
Wine of fresh grapes imports was estimated at X litres in 2022, approximately mirroring 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 19%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X litres in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, wine of fresh grapes imports declined slightly to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Russia was the largest importing country with an import of about X litres, which accounted for 77% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X litres), constituting an 18% share of total imports. Kazakhstan (X litres) held a minor share of total imports.
Imports into Russia decreased at an average annual rate of -6.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Belarus (+3.3%) and Kazakhstan (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +3.3% from 2012-2022. While the share of Belarus (+9.9 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Russia (-13.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) in the CIS, comprising 88% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 6.9% share of total imports.
In Russia, wine of fresh grapes imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belarus (+2.3% per year) and Kazakhstan (+0.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per litre, with a decrease of -4.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per litre in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per litre), while Belarus ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+7.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
