In 2022, Russia (X tons) represented the largest exporter of wood pellets, achieving 78% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), creating a 22% share of total exports.

Exports from Russia increased at an average annual rate of +12.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Belarus (+21.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +21.0% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Belarus increased by +10 percentage points.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest wood pellets supplier in the CIS, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 23% share of total exports.

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 7.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a mild descent. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Russia totaled $X per ton.

In 2022, approx. X tons of wood pellets were imported in the CIS; picking up by 73% against the previous year. Overall, imports posted significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 112% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, wood pellets imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 56%. Belarus represented the largest importer of wood pellets in the CIS, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 65% of total imports in 2022. Moldova (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 17% share, followed by Kazakhstan (9.5%) and Russia (8%).

Imports into Belarus increased at an average annual rate of +40.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Moldova (+55.7%), Kazakhstan (+33.4%) and Russia (+9.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Moldova emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +55.7% from 2012-2022. Belarus (+29 p.p.) and Moldova (+17 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -46.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Belarus ($X), Russia ($X) and Moldova ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 92% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Moldova, with a CAGR of +74.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -10.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the import price increased by 48% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Moldova (+12.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
