Woven Carpet Market Size in CIS

The CIS woven carpet market shrank to $X in 2022, reducing by -2.7% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2021, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

In value terms, woven carpet production expanded significantly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +10.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 85% against the previous year. In 2022, approx. X square meters of woven carpets and other woven textile coverings were exported in the CIS; declining by -17.1% against the year before. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 138% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X square meters in 2021, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

In value terms, woven carpet exports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed temperate growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 97%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Uzbekistan (X square meters) and Belarus (X square meters) represented the major exporters of woven carpets and other woven textile coverings in 2022, reaching approx. 45% and 30% of total exports, respectively. Moldova (X square meters) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Russia (X square meters) and Armenia (X square meters). All these countries together took approx. 24% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +163.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Among the main exporting countries, Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +128.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per square meter in 2022, surging by 8.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per square meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Moldova ($X per square meter), while Uzbekistan ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Moldova (+0.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, imports of woven carpets and other woven textile coverings in the CIS fell sharply to X square meters, which is down by -21% against 2021 figures. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 77% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X square meters in 2021, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

In value terms, woven carpet imports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Russia (X square meters) was the major importer of woven carpets and other woven textile coverings, creating 37% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X square meters), Kyrgyzstan (X square meters), Azerbaijan (X square meters) and Belarus (X square meters), together mixing up a 56% share of total imports. The following importers - Armenia (X square meters) and Moldova (X square meters) - each reached a 4.4% share of total imports.

Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Azerbaijan (+41.1%), Armenia (+27.5%), Belarus (+21.7%) and Kyrgyzstan (+4.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Azerbaijan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +41.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Moldova (-1.3%) and Kazakhstan (-5.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and Armenia increased by +14, +6.2, +2.5 and +2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest woven carpet importing markets in the CIS were Russia ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Belarus ($X), together comprising 77% of total imports. Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia and Moldova lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 20%.

Azerbaijan, with a CAGR of +36.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per square meter, surging by 17% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a mild contraction. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per square meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per square meter), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+5.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
