In 2021, approx. X square meters of woven woolen fabrics were exported in the CIS; rising by 10% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, exports, however, showed a mild descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 42%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X square meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, woolen fabric exports rose slightly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 40% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Belarus (X square meters) and Russia (X square meters) prevails in exports structure, together achieving 98% of total exports. Kyrgyzstan (X square meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Kyrgyzstan (with a CAGR of +1.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Russia ($X), Belarus ($X) and Kyrgyzstan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 100% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Kyrgyzstan, with a CAGR of -0.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per square meter in 2021, which is down by -7.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 12% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per square meter in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per square meter), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kyrgyzstan (-1.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

After two years of decline, purchases abroad of woven woolen fabrics increased by 21% to X square meters in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a pronounced decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 56%. The volume of import peaked at X square meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, woolen fabric imports declined modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, faced a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Belarus (X square meters) and Russia (X square meters) represented the key importers of woven woolen fabrics in the CIS, together making up 81% of total imports. It was followed by Belarus (X square meters), Moldova (X square meters), Uzbekistan (X square meters) and Kazakhstan (X square meters), together constituting a 33% share of total imports. Kyrgyzstan (X square meters), Moldova (X square meters) and Uzbekistan (X square meters) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, woolen fabric imports into expanded with a Russia of +0.6%, while Belarus (-9.7%) experienced a deep contraction unchanged over the same period. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+35.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +35.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kazakhstan (-1.9%), Belarus (-9.7%), Uzbekistan (-13.2%) and Moldova (-14.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Russia (+21 p.p.) and Kyrgyzstan (+3.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Uzbekistan, Moldova and Belarus saw its share reduced by -5.4%, -6.1% and -15.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported woven woolen fabrics in the CIS, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 23% share of total imports. It was followed by Moldova, with a 9.7% share.

In Russia, woolen fabric imports contracted by an average annual rate of -6.4% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (-16.6% per year) and Moldova (-13.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per square meter, which is down by -17.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 3.1%. The level of import peaked at $X per square meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
