Exports in CIS
Yams exports soared to X kg in 2018, rising by 183% against 2017 figures. In general, exports posted a significant expansion. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, yams exports surged to $X in 2018. Overall, exports showed a strong expansion. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
The biggest shipments were from Kazakhstan (X kg), together reaching 100% of total export.
Kazakhstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the yams exports, with a CAGR of +417.9% from 2015 to 2018. Kazakhstan (+99 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) also remains the largest yams supplier in the CIS.
From 2015 to 2018, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Kazakhstan stood at +438.9%.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2018, with a decrease of -51.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a precipitous curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price decreased by -36.6%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2018, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Kazakhstan.
From 2015 to 2018, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Kazakhstan amounted to +3.9% per year.
Yams Imports
Imports in CIS
Yams imports dropped to X tons in 2022, waning by -6.6% compared with the previous year. In general, imports, however, saw strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 185% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, yams imports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, posted significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 105% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
Imports by Country
Russia prevails in imports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 89% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), committing an 8.2% share of total imports. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of +17.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+77.7%) and Kazakhstan (+25.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +77.7% from 2012-2022. While the share of Kazakhstan (+3.7 p.p.) and Kyrgyzstan (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Russia (-6.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported yams in the CIS, comprising 90% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with an 8.6% share of total imports.
In Russia, yams imports expanded at an average annual rate of +24.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kazakhstan (+36.5% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (+64.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -1.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 87% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan (+9.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
